Smart Grocery Shopping with a Bicycle

 SAVE THE PLANET AND YOUR WAISTLINE WITH SMART BICYCLE GROCERY SHOPPING!

Don't think that you are just limited to grabbing a loaf of bread and a quart of milk from the grocery store with your bicycle.  No indeed!  The recipe for successful grocery shopping with your bike is simple.

Add 1 bicycle with a rack and inexpensive medium-sized panniers (~$30 for the Sunlite bag)

Fold in $30 dollars worth of groceries and you have dinner for 4

(Note to the frivilous food police:  Yes, I KNOW those are York Peppermint Patty Cookies.  So shoot me.)

With a set of Axiom larger panniers (also inexpensive at ~$60), you can do a week's worth of grocery shopping by bicycle. They expend to gigantic proportions and easily hold 50 pounds of groceries.

Mysteriously you will discover that your shopping habits change.  Instead of selecting canned items and highly processed food (which are bulkier and heavier and less nutritional) you'll find yourself drawn to fresh foods, fruits and vegetables, and fresh unfrozen cuts of meat.  Not only is this kinder to your waistline but it also serves as a boost to your immune system and sense of well-being. 

The monstrous bi-weekly shopping trip by automobile that everyone dreads can be replaced with space-limiting trips by bicycle.  You'll buy wiser, you won't select as many frivilous foods (like pictured above in my first bike-shopping trip) and getting to the grocery store and back home is a pleasant adventure you can share with your family.

Bike Delaware, Delaware's bicycle advocacy group, will be working over the next several months with local grocery stores to make this process easy and appealing to Delaware residents with the installation of convenient bicycle racks and discount shopping incentives for customers who shop by bicycle.
